Pathetic Knuckles

Today would have been my best friend's 27th birthday. He has been dead for nearly 5 years now and I still miss him a lot. I decided to commemorate his birthday with this cover photo (which I squared out because for some reason Blogger doesn't like long things) for his face book page.

Tattooed Sailor Girl

Originally this was going to be part of a post I was going to do on 10.10.10. where it was a series of 3 pinups all 10s (get it?) however, my homework ended up taking longer and I had some problems making art during the week so I have decided to simply post them all separately as I make them.
I have have a series of Sailor Girl pinup sketches sitting around for a long time and I have been meaning to finish one. This surprisingly was not one of them, after having so much fun illustrating the Tattoo Style Gilda Head I felt like drawing another portrait like that. I gave her that expression channeling Popeye the Sailor Man. I tried to giver her all traditional sailor tattoos. I had added the 10s for the 10 theme I was going for, though with what I have planned for my next pinup it ended up becoming more of a playing card theme.

Tattoo Style Gilda Head

While working on the new Face Book Fan Page profile picture for the 1 year CT celebration. I was looking at a lot of tattoo reference and sketching various pin up pictures of Gilda. One of the reference pictures that I found was a series of woman's heads and I sketched up Gilda in that style. San didn't like it for the profile picture, however she loved the sketch and we now both want to get it tattooed on us, as soon as we make enough money doing then comic to pay for it.

Gilda in a Beer

So for some time now San and I have been talking about updating the Consensual Tentacle Fan Page's profile picture; the one year anniversary and the 100th comic are coming up soon it seemed like a good time to update in celebration! The concept behind this piece was to make it look like an old school pinup tattoo. I loosely based this off of some Sailor Jerry flash, particularly the piece that has a woman sitting in a martini glass. We took that idea and decided to use a beer glass instead, much more Gilda Greene's style.

August's Jar Jar Butt Tattoo

So if you follow Consensual Tentacle or my face book art album this might not be new, however, I really love this drawing and felt remiss not adding it to my blog as well. And here I get to add some explanation, which I'm surprised no one else has asked for. This is a detailed shot of the tattoo on August's butt in if i say he is a burglar, a burglar he is. The back story behind the tattoo is that August made a bet with his best friend, and lost (what that bet was is another story), and the stakes involved getting a Jar Jar Binks Tattoo. Hence the text "always pay your debts." It's also fitting because it was the fact that Jar Jar owed Qui-Gon Jinn a life debt, which was he got tacked on to their whole journey and he was able to ruin the whole galaxy.

IRDRIVR

I only learned how to drive last October, and after I passed my driving test I sketched an Ed "Big Daddy" Roth style version of me driving a hot rod for my sketch blog.

Here is the final version that I created in Illustrator. A friend of mine recently contacted me about doing some Illustrator work and now I'm all gung ho about working with the program. This project was something that I have been wanting to work on for a while so I decided to just do it. I got this done in 16 hours or so. I haven't decided if I want to do more with the image, like shading. I want to do a little more with the background but right now I can't think of anything specific that would add to the piece.

Close up of my head. I based my head mostly off of Rat Fink, thus the bug eyes, tongue and drool.

Here is a detail shot of my Kappa Tattoo. I decided to show a detail of it because it turned out really cute which I hadn't really expected.

Detail shot of Laura riding on the back of my hot rod in a bikini with her parasol.

Detail shot of the snake tattoo that I designed for Laura's arm. She doesn't really have this tattoo but we've discussed the concept before.

Details shot of a Jellyfish tattoo I made up on Laura's leg. She doesn't really have this tattoo but she has talked about getting one like it for her mother.

The Tattooist

I have started to learn how to tattoo. To commemorate this I decided to draw myself as a tattoo artist working in a shop.

In progress :

This is the final version. Most of the Flash on the walls is based off of the flash of Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins. One of the biggest names in American tattoo, Collins was the one who is responsible for many of the designs and motifs that are associated with American traditional tattoo.

However, some of the flash is own design. In the next couple of months I plan on working on some original flash pages; stay tuned!

The Crusher of Hearts

Earlier this year I did a sketch for my daily sketch blog of a female Luchador crushing a heart and named it "Yo Soy La Reina De La Trituradora Del Anillo" which in Spanish means (or at least what meant I meant it to mean) "I'm the Crusher, Queen of the Ring." Named after the Ramones song "The Crusher".

I really liked the sketch but i wanted to do more with it and so i decided to redraw it here are a
few sketches.

I wanted to capture more of the whole scene in the painting i want to do. So I wanted to make sure to draw her as full figure in the ring. For some reason I have a habit of drawing characters too big so that they don't fit on the page, so I wanted to make sure I had the whole figure. The Idea was to make it maybe like the end of the fight and she has ripped out her opponent's heart and she is surrounded by the dead. I love little Dia De Los Muertos statues and they were my inspiration for the audence members.

I felt that the most important part of the painting is her squeezing the heart. I didn't feel like i had a good position for her to stand in so I worked on the on some detail sketches of her of her standing in a different position planing to go back and drawing the whole scene around her when i found something I was happy with.

In this sketch trying to iron out position and posing so she looks like she is crushing it. I was also trying to get back to the original sketch design and try and recapture some of what i loved in that drawing.

I decided to move from here to a test painting, i wanted to make sure that I had the hand gesture correct and I wanted to make sure that I could paint her well, it has been a long time since I painted with water color so I was a little uneasy about starting it.

Here is the first in a series of paintings that I plan to do with Luchadors and in particular La Trituradora de Corazóns.

I tried a new technique where I painted over the sketch and then inked the painting, it works, but the only benefit is my black outlines are darker, so I don't know if I will do it again.
