Jay Z as King Koopa

In late 2009 I was commissioned to do a picture of Jay Z as King Koopa by a friend of my brother's.

















This one was simple enough, I just placed Jay Z's head on to King Koopa's body


















With the second sketch I was going for more of a King Koopa and Jay Z fusion and I leaned on the Jay Z side. I think this turned into an awesome design for a hat and coat that I would love to own.

















This one I tried more of a half and half (i.e. more human proportions on King Koopa and Jay Z's face) and it turned out to be the approach that I felt looked the best.
















Here is a refinement of sketch number 3 with some sketches of Princess Peach and Beyonce as, which I played with for a while, though then it seems like Mario is trying to steal Jay Z's girl instead of vice versa and I couldn't play Mario like that. So instead I left it as Princess Peach but I made it seem like Princess Peach liked Jay Z Koopa better then Mario, which I felt worked for the piece.

This was a fun project I hope I get to work like this in the future.

Gilda Green

She works in the I.T. department of some big faceless soulless corporation and hates her Job. She spends her free time with her beau August either at their apartment, at the bar, or on some wacky adventure.

Paper Bag Yokai

I have fallen in love with the Japanese demons known as Yokai; they are so different and strange and have interesting back stories and modes of attack, they demand to be drawn. Here are a few that I drew on paper bags.

Here is Rokuro Kubi, this is the Snake-Necked Rokuro Kubi, who by day is a normal woman but at night her head leaves the room with her long neck and hunts for grubs or human vitality of Qi.

Here is Tofu Kozo, which means Tofu Boy. He temps people to eat the tofu and some times it kills them, some times it does nothing.

Here is my favorite, Azuki Arai;, he is a strange Yokai who lives in canyons in high mountains. Azuki Arai is the Bean Washer, he sings a song while he washes his beans.

"Wash me beans, or catch me a human to eat ... Shoki-Shoki! Shoki-Shoki!"

This song confuses passers by and makes them get lost and at times has been know to make them lose their balance and fall their deaths in their attempts to catch a glimpse of this Yoaki.

Paper Bag Kappa

Here is a paper bag drawing of a Kappa, a Japanese water imp, who is a Yokai, which are monsters and demons of local Japanese legend. I have recently started studying about Yokai and find them fascinating; I plan to do more illustrations of them. I was turned onto the Yokai by my friend Jason who recommended that Laura and I should see "The Great Yokai War" and "Gegege No Kitaro" both live action movies filled with Yokai both as CGI and as dudes in glorious rubber suits. They are awesome movies and would recommend them to every one. Kappa are one of my favourite yokai in particular, I even have one tattooed on my left leg, so you can be expecting to see more of these in the future.

Paper Bag Drawings

I draw on what I can get my hands on, and one of the materials I've been able to get my hands on lately is paper bags.

In high school I was yelled at several times by a substitute art teacher for using inferior materials to create art. The old garbage in garbage out bit. But hey, if Drink and Drawl Social Club's Dave Johnson will work on paper bags, they can't be all bad.
